5 Tips to protect yourself in the field:
- Avoid tall grass and dense vegetation.
- Wear light-colored clothing. Tuck pants legs into socks, tuck in shirt tails, wear long sleeves.
- Apply repellents beforehand. DEET (adults 50%, children 30%) or Avon Skin So Soft Tick & Mosquito Repellent (nontoxic) to skin, and permethrin based repellent to clothing (never skin). Always follow directions: some repellents may cause toxic or allergic reactions.
- Check for ticks frequently. Never remove attached tick using bare hands, heat or chemicals, save tick in bag with moist cotton.
- Shower immediately after checking for ticks, wash all clothing, dry on hot cycle for at least 10 minutes.
