Lyme disease education and prevention

5 Tips to protect yourself in the field:
  1. Avoid tall grass and dense vegetation.
  2. Wear light-colored clothing. Tuck pants legs into socks, tuck in shirt tails, wear long sleeves.
  3. Apply repellents beforehand. DEET (adults 50%, children 30%) or Avon Skin So Soft Tick & Mosquito Repellent (nontoxic) to skin, and permethrin based repellent to clothing (never skin). Always follow directions: some repellents may cause toxic or allergic reactions.
  4. Check for ticks frequently. Never remove attached tick using bare hands, heat or chemicals, save tick in bag with moist cotton.
  5. Shower immediately after checking for ticks, wash all clothing, dry on hot cycle for at least 10 minutes.
